How Does a Jaw Crusher Work? Working Principle & Crushing Process

Driven by the electric motor, power is transmitted through V-belts and pulleys to drive the eccentric shaft. The rotating eccentric shaft enables the movable jaw to perform periodic reciprocating swinging motion, moving towards and away from the fixed jaw plate.

When the movable jaw swings toward the fixed jaw, raw rocks trapped between the two jaw plates are subjected to compression, bending and splitting forces. Once the applied stress exceeds the rock’s compressive strength, the stones fracture into smaller fragments.

As the eccentric shaft continues rotating, the movable jaw retreats backward. The gap of the bottom discharge opening widens. Crushed particles that meet the required size fall out from the outlet under gravity. Oversized rock pieces stay inside the crushing chamber and undergo repeated crushing in the next working cycle.

This cyclic squeezing and releasing movement runs continuously, achieving batch crushing of bulk rocks to produce qualified aggregate products. The toggle plate serves as a key safety component: it will fracture automatically when uncrushable foreign objects enter the crushing cavity, protecting the crusher’s main components from severe damage.
